Groundwater Management within River Basins
VENUE: Johannesburg, South Africa
DATE: 18th July 2011 TIME: 18th July 2011
Groundwater tends to be a resource that is not actively managed in many parts of the world, despite its overriding critical importance for the water balance in all countries. A further problem is that groundwater is often not included in the management brief for core surface water management agencies, such as River (and Lake) Basin Organizations. Where it is included, groundwater is often relegated to a Cinderella role and neglected due to limited professional expertise in the RBO structures.
WaterNet, AGW-Net and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) Johannesburg, South Africa will hold a one-week course on Groundwater Management within River Basins. This course is a modification of our flagship groundwater management course and focuses on key factors for integrating groundwater management into surface water management systems and river basin organizations.
